On Friday, the license to operate 24-hour gambling granted to Aspers Northampton Casino in Commercial Road took effect and was immediately put into operation that weekend. It is the first casino in Northampton, United Kingdom to be given such authorization to operate nonstop gaming to commence 10 a.m. on Fridays until 6 a.m. the following Wednesday. Casino officials say the license will be applied as long as there is robust interest for gambling in the town.
During its start when the casino opened in June 2008, the opening hours was from noon until 6 a.m. the following day, and was later extended to 10 a.m. Adam Page, Northampton’s campaign manager said the granting of the 24-hour operating license is proof that the casino’s business is doing well. “The work we have done around ensuring responsible gambling will have been taken into account during the application process, as will the fact we have worked hard to make sure there is no anti-social behaviour in the area associated with the casino. We have had a very successful start to the year, and had a good Christmas, so demand is definitely there for a 24-hour service during the weekend.
The opening times will be monitored but as long as that demand is there, we will operate these opening times for the foreseeable future,” Page said.
GamCare, a charity that combines efforts with Aquarius, an addiction service based in Northampton, said through a spokesperson that Aspers would be controlled by strict rules to make sure that the facility is not negligent of its duty to promote responsible gaming. She said: “We work in very close partnership with industry to ensure the best care is taken for gamers, and irresponsible gambling is not encouraged. Aspers will be required to make sure their staff are fully trained to deal with 24-hour gambling and that their customers have access to information on where to go for help if they need it.”
General Manager Nigel Hartland said: “Since we opened in Northampton we have had a great response from the public and implementing 24-hour opening at weekends is testament to that. We always look to offer our customers the best and we have taken on board their feedback, which indicated this move would be a welcome step.” The permit applies to all of the Aspers facilities which include gambling, a bar, live music and Clary’s restaurant.
