Bradley Byrne and Robert Bentley, are the 2 leading Republicans fighting for the governor seat in Alabama. Both have opposing views about the issue of gambling which sparked a lot of debates among legislators. Bentley on one side is pushing for a statewide vote to decide if gambling should be shut down altogether , which includes paper bingo and dog racing. Byrne on the other hand opposes the referendum saying that this paves way to illegal gambling instead. The Democrat’s Governor bet, Ron Sparks has a far different take on the issue, proposing the expansion of gambling that will lead to increased revenue for the state. Both Bentley and Byrne says they oppose the Democrat’s point of view.

Bentley thinks that expanded gambling is a “poor way to fund the government”. Byrne says its generally bad for the society and the economy in many aspects. The current government under Governor Bob Riley has tried to eliminate some degree of gambling in the state, in the form of electronic bingo casinos except those controlled by the state. Byrne shares the same stand with that of Governor Riley’s to ban and make electronic bingo machines illegal statewide.”We have a pretty clear statement of the law right now. I think we need to enforce the law the way it is,” Byrne said.

On the other hand, Bentley wants the people to make a unanimous vote, stating that a referendum among the people will help reflect their best interest and will be most beneficial for them. He proposes a vote to either ban paper bingo games and dog races and all other forms of gambling, or to allow certain forms of gambling, the choices of which are laid out before the people cast their votes. Even with pretty good intentions, Bentley thinks his proposition is not looking too great. “It’s unrealistic to think that would ever take place because the gamblers aren’t going to gamble on that” Bentley said.

If no statewide vote is to be approved, Bentley will opt to pass a law on gambling forms but will enforce it differently as compared to how the current government does. Governor Riley is known to raid casinos with large number of troops attacking casino facilities in unexpected instances. Bentley said he would not be approaching the problem in such a way. Instead, he plans to send troops to just inspect the casinos and its machines by means of a search warrant. If anything illegal is found, then a shutdown will be in place.

Bradley Byrne thinks this proposition of Bentley might get though because owners of casino and suppliers can fund the approval of it better compared to opposition forces that may not be able to defend their stand on this. Bentley says that if the statewide ban takes place, the 3 Indian casinos, that are lone casinos not under state control will also be affected, thus making a shut down possible for these facilities as well. Both agree that the National Indian Gaming Commission’s current policy is to allow electronic bingo machines, but if any of the 2 aspiring leaders do win, he will be using the influence of being a governor to reverse the commission’s regulation. Byrne faces this with uncertainty. “I don’t know realistically how far that is going to go” he explained but is continues to be hopeful.

Currently , there are no full scale Alabama casinos yet and gambling facilities are primarily bingo houses under the management of Native Americans. As a result the revenues from these bingo casinos cannot be taxed by the state of Alabama, since these are owned by a federally recognized tribe. Games available to the people of Alabama are horse racing tracks and dog races, a few slot machines, video gambling machines, and pull-tab cards.
