It comes as no surprise that the casino industry in the United States has suffered continuous blows after the economic crash that affected the spending habits of people from all walks of life, not only in the US but also in all parts of the globe.
Money usually spent on luxury items and vacations for instance, have been stowed away for emergencies and necessities. More and more people now are only looking at spending for the bare essentials and budget for recreational activities have long been forgotten.
When once before, only a few years back, the casino industry is booming; today, a number of casinos have disclosed that they are suffering from losses and have been at the receiving end of the economic downturn since it came crashing heavily down.
But there may still be hope for the casino hotels in the US, particularly in Atlantic City, as recent visitor activity has indicated that a good percentage of their patrons are guests who are staying overnight or even several nights at a time.
In Atlantic City, in a report made by the Gaming Industry Observer, there is much hope for the casino industry here to get a new lease on life as the total number of hours the guests spent here were over by fifteen hours than the previous year.
This is a good indication that there is still a continuous patronage of the casino hotels in the city. While overnight guests may be spending less on their casino games at this time, the casinos are hopeful that this will soon change.
On average, a casino player this year spends almost nine dollars on their games each hour; while some four years ago, the average was close to eleven dollars per hour. Gaming Industry Observer publisher, Michael Pollock, who also happens to be the managing director of Spectrum Gaming Corp. a casino consultancy firm, mentioned that casino goers who once frequented Atlantic City are now allotting less and less on their gambling budget.
But the silver lining here for casinos is the continued flow of overnight visitors who are potential casino patrons and if they stay a bit longer; the chances of them playing at the casino floors increases.
The percentage share of guests staying overnight is roughly thirty percent of the city’s market; while day-trippers traveling in their private vehicles take the bigger share this year at fifty-two percent; and bus travelers stopping to play at the casinos take the remaining eighteen percent.
Games usually played by the day-trippers are the slot machines on the casino floors. An obvious advantage of these casino hotels from other casinos mainly operating games is that they take a good percentage of the market share when it comes to guests staying overnight. While overnight guests are usually loyal customers who have been frequenting the city’s casino hotels for years, there is still much room to increase this number dramatically.
By keeping this in mind, Pollock further stated that the casino hotels should utilize this advantage by focusing on the market who are potential stay-in guests. By advertising themselves as full casino resorts with luxurious rooms complete with all the amenities to make them among the best world-class casino hotels in the US, they could increase their market share by a good percentage this year and in the coming years.
While Atlantic City may not be enjoying the same popularity as most of the other casino hotels in Las Vegas, this strong edge over other casinos in nearby states, when acknowledged for its full potential, could very well be the redeeming factor for Atlantic City’s casino hotels.
