It has always been observed in the past, particularly in casinos in The Strip and in Atlantic City that gambling revenues get a boost during the Memorial Day weekend. Memorial Day is celebrated on the last Monday of May, which falls on May 28 this year.
Hundreds of gambling facilities all over the country are looking forward to increased business activity in the next three days as more people, having an extra day on their weekend, are expected to visit casinos and spend a little extra as a way of celebrating the holiday.
Every state that has gambling is also anticipating the increased spending by gamblers at slot machines and card tables, which means more taxes and additional money to the state’s cash-starved coffers.
Some casino officials have projected that Memorial Day weekends cause gambling revenues to jump 25 percent compared to revenues during regular weekends. In Delaware, excitement is all over Harrington Raceway and Casino as it primes itself for this Friday’s opening of its table games offering.
Although low-limit games have been going on for the past week in the casino, Friday of the Memorial Day weekend is the start of the full-scale table games in the casino.
After Friday, Delaware will officially become a key participant in the country’s gambling industry, with its full-fledged casinos and sports betting, which are offered only by one other state, Nevada.
Delaware is trying its hand to turn itself into the gaming capital in the Northeast. Gamblers in Delaware will be entertained in Harrington’s twenty four hours of gambling in baccarat, roulette, craps, poker and slot machines, every single day of the year.
Harrington offers all the games being offered in La Vegas and Atlantic City. Gaming analyst Steve Schwartz said, “This is a historic day for the state of Delaware.
Other states are moving in the same direction as Delaware, but none have gotten to where they are going as fast as this state. This will give them some time to establish themselves as the place to be to enjoy casino gambling.” Two other casinos in Delaware, Dover Downs and Delaware Park will open a few weeks later.
After Delaware, Pennsylvania is next in line. Lawmakers in that state have authorized the expansion of gambling early this year and by summer, some of the casinos in Pennsylvania will start offering table games and the other casinos to follow suit soon after. Other states are also considering expanding their gambling including New York, Maryland, Massachusetts and Maine.
In Florida, Las Vegas-based casino companies have been eyeing the state’s waterfront sites in hopes of setting up full-scale casino resorts. Legislators of the state of Florida have also just signed a gambling compact with the Seminole Tribe allowing some of the tribe’s casinos to operate card games. Barbecues used to be the most popular way to celebrate Memorial Day weekend, but in most states where the weather makes it impossible for people to stay outdoors, casinos have become a widely accepted option.
On the Memorial Day weekend, people find it a treat to be able to play at a casino on Sunday and not having to worry about working on Monday because they have that day off. Also, older parents with grown up children like to spend the weekend having dinner at a casino buffet and playing their slots. Gaming analysts will surely consider Friday a red letter day for Delaware because that day marks a change in the Northeast region’s gambling industry.
