The state of Ohio is currently buzzing with news regarding four new casinos that will be established around cities surround Dayton. Experts are not certain of the impact the four casinos will have on the local economy. Experts say they have to wait until after a few months once operations start, before they can make a thorough assessment of the impacts. The Horseshoe Casino is expected to open a year and a half from now, the state government is optimistic that it will create new jobs opportunities for local businesses to thrive. The casinos will also serve to help tourism in the areas, not to mention bringing in much needed revenues to the locales in the form of taxes. However, speculations have been circulating that because the economic activity of the four soon to be established casinos is going to be centralized to Cincinnati, Columbus, Cleveland and Toledo, Dayton might get left out. Analysts believe that with the casinos in the surrounding areas, money from Dayton will be siphoned off to these four other cities. Local businesses in Dayton would also be left with a less active market when surrounded by the other surrounding cities that host casinos.

“I’m sure everybody’s going to have to go check them (casinos) out; we might see a little bit of a drop-off in the beginning,” according to Shanon Morgan, president of the Miami Valley Restaurant Association. “But I don’t think it’s going to greatly affect us in Dayton. I haven’t heard any of our members stressing about it.” The Cincinnati casino is expected to attract at least six million people per year. Even though Dayton residents are only expected to spend very little in casinos, the total amount, if accumulated, will be significant enough to affect the city’s local economy. Moreover, when people visit the casinos at other cities, they tend to spend money on local services, thus ultimately competing with Dayton’s own businesses. “Casinos are magnets for people within a 60-mile radius, and Dayton would be part of Cincinnati’s bread-and-butter market,’’ said Joe Weinert, an industry analyst with Spectrum Gaming Group in New Jersey.

There is no doubt that the possibility of the development of restaurants, shopping venues, and glitzy bars will increase once the casinos will begin its operationsl. Although gambling will remain the main attraction, the locals will most likely adjust to the steady stream of visitors, catering to the needs of the market. Caesars Entertainment Corp. and Rock Gaming which is based in Cleveland said that there is without a doubt that eating and drinking establishments will be integrated into their establishment. Kevin Kline, senior vice president and general manager of (CEC) said that this is very likely to happen, even in their previous ventures in other locations. “It’s all very connected, and it’s all about the opportunity to really integrate our business with the other businesses, attractions and activities that happen in downtown Cincinnati,” Kline said. Joe Weinert of the Spectrum Gaming Group believes that the integration of eating and drinking as well as shopping establishments will only be the beginning.

Experts have expressed concerns for Dayton saying that it would have been better to balance out the situation by allowing a casino in the city as well. The cities of Ohio have been unstirred for many generations and unprecedented events such as hosting casinos are a blow out. Naturally, people will welcome change in the community, especially for establishments as beneficial as these, with opportunities that can potentially improve the area’s standard of living. On the other hand, Dayton still remains in the gray areas of the current situation largely because of the possible economic drawbacks that the host cities’ casinos could cause.

The concerns over Dayton City is not an isolated case. All over the US, states have opted to expand their gambling capabilities in order to cushion the effects of the recession. This brings the same problem to a statewide level. States are pushed into adopting expansions themselves due in most part to the competition brought about by the expansion in gambling by neighboring states. The effects of the domino effect of expanding gambling is yet to be seen. As of now, people will just have wait and see what happens while making the best out of the opportunities such expansions bring to the locales.
