A press release issued Tuesday by the Mason-Dixon Resort and Casino said Penn National Gaming pledged to develop and operate the proposed casino and resort situated between Gettysburg and the Mason-Dixon Line, and about two miles from the Maryland border.
Spokesman David La Torre said the company filed an application April 7 with the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board for a Category 3 Resort License. Co-principal David LeVan, a native of Gettysburg, and Joseph A. Lashinger Jr., former Penn National Gaming vice-president, said Penn National will provide the money that would renovate the existing Eisenhower Hotel & Conference Center for the development and construction of the $75 million venture.
As per the gaming board’s policy, a Category 3 license allows an established resort hotel to operate up to 600 slot machines and up to 50 table games. Proposals of the Mason-Dixon Resort & Casino’s developers include a 300-room hotel, 20,000 square feet of room for meetings and exhibits, casual and fine-dining restaurants, plenty of parking space and other resort amenities.
If granted the license, they also intend to operate the maximum number of slot machines and table games allowable. “We believe the location of this (proposed) facility can drive additional daytime and overnight tourism in the area and help stimulate the local economy,” Penn National Gaming Senior Vice President of Regional Operations John V. Finamore said in the news release.
La Torre said the Mason-Dixon Resort & Casino would give tourists something to do in the evenings by way of the Baltimore-Washington, D.C. metro market. La Torre called it “the perfect project” and said, “It allows Pennsylvania to put a casino virtually on the border of Maryland and tap into a new audience.” La Torre said further that the casino resort would be able to keep around 100 jobs at the problem-ridden Eisenhower Convention Center and the expansion would give rise to hundreds more.
He said arrangements have already been made with Gettysburg Tours to provide transport services for guests, and also with Ski Liberty and the Links at Gettysburg golf resort. “The development of Mason-Dixon’s Adams County resort will provide meaningful economic benefits to the region, including construction, full-time employment and new tax revenues while creating an important new tourist destination in the Gettysburg area. We look forward to continuing our work with local and state authorities to develop a distinctive entertainment resort hotel.” LeVan said
