The job fair in Port Canaveral attracted almost 400 hopeful job applicants expecting to fill vacant jobs on the Victory Casino Cruises gaming ship. The hiring process started around 11 a.m. The whole process is a 3-day job fair, beginning the moment the gates of the Cruise Terminal 2 was opened. At the end of the first day, authorities estimated there were about a hundred applicants for each vacant position. The applicants came from different places, some for as far as Stuart, in the hopes of better work. The earliest of the applicants started falling in line as early as 5:30 AM, 6 hours before the job fair actually begun.
Darell Henley, a 62 year old job seeker from Palm Shores, claimed, “I’m just open for anything,” Prior to moving to Florida, he had worked in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, on a ferry boat. One of the people who were at the beginning of the line was Morris Banks. “The job market is brutal,” said the 47 year old job applicant from Cocoa. The dismal unemployment rate in Brevard County was highlighted by the job fair. Some of the applicants expressions their concerns that the job fair is an eye-opener which proves that the local officials should do something to lessen the 11.8 percent unemployment rate. With unemplyment figures in the double digits, the jobs produced by the Victor Casino Cruises is a welcome respite.
The chief executive officer of the Canaveral Port Authority, J. Stanley Payne, said that “The tone of this relationship is different — it’s business-like. There’s no emotion involved. It’s very similar to the relationship we have with the cruise lines.” He claims that this venture is not usual. Between February and March of next year, the Victory Casino Cruise ship will begin to sail. They will operate twice a day, in a five hour cruise from Terminal 2. Victory I (renamed from the ship that was operated by the bankrupted Sun Cruz Casino Corp, SurfSide Princess) is a passenger ship that can carry 1200 passengers. The ship is currently being renovated, for a million dollars, for its debut in 2011.
A principal with Victory Casino Cruise ship, Eric Rahn said,”She’ll be on par with anything you’ll see over at the Hard Rock or any other gaming venues here in Florida” Most of the 400 job seekers that were present during the job fair were former employees of Sun Cruz, which was the largest and the last gambling company in Port Canaveral. It left 300 people jobless when the company stopped its operations on the 15th of December 2009 as result of budget problems. Former Sun Cruz emplyess, though, by virtue of their experience, still do not have an edge over the other applicants. Rahn said that they will only hire the best of the best.”Whether you come from within the industry or are outside the industry, we’re here to train you to our standards. Just because you worked for one of the other companies in the past, that does not guarantee you a job with us,” he added.
One of the many people who believe that he met Rahn’s criteria was the 62 year old Butch Ward. Butch Ward, whose job before was in security in a Las Vegas Casino Lines ship, lives in Indian Harbour Beach. The Las Vegas Casino Lines ship vessel that houses gaming facilities filed for bankruptcy on May 2009. Ward is now working for the community as an association manager. He added that the company he worked for did not pay him his last salary.
Payne feels that the business will have a better tomorrow, just like the people hoping to land jobs on Victory Casino Cruises. In fact, Victory’s partners have already paid the $650,000 just for the installments to the Canaveral Port Authority. And the interest is strong among would-be patrons. “We’ve had hundreds of calls from people asking us when the ship will sail. I think that shows there is a market out there for this,” Payne said.
