The issue of online gambling has recently become a cause for news in different sectors in the Canadian provinces that have been aggressive in promoting online gambling for the past year. Unlike before when provinces are focused on online gambling and how this industry would pad their budget deficits, provinces are now faced with a larger dilemma: how to combat gambling among their residents while making sure that the online gambling project that they have invested in and lobbied for so long won’t end up being a project that only promised but never delivered on the financial aspect.

One gambler said he tried online poker in 2006 and got hooked. In 2006, online sites in Canada were still considered illegal as they operated without licenses. The gambling aficionado continued his story by saying that he has tried all sorts of gambling over the years and that online gambling is one form of gaming that is easiest to have access to. All one needs is a computer or laptop and an internet connection. Aside from being the most accessible, online gambling is also the most fun according to gamblers, which is why it is compared to many popular hobbies today. So many factors contribute to online gambling being a hobby. For one, at least in most cases, a person is isolated when facing the computer and playing. Thus, there is no one to bother the person enjoying his pastime. Regular casino players are attracted to it right away. The convenience, secrecy and a little element of danger knowing that there is still that chance that you could lose keeps players on edge.

Another factor contributing to the success of this passion is the speed. With casino games played in a physical casino, there may be a lull while waiting for some factors like waiting for the dealer or another player. With online gaming, the speed is never an issue, in some occasions the speed is even 10 times faster than playing in a normal casino. With the card shuffling of the dealer virtually eliminated and the speed of a turn from every player cut, a lot of time is saved, not to mention the elimination of the length of time players take in betting. Online gaming just needs one click of a mouse and games are played as fast as the player wishes. Another big factor involved in the success of online gaming is that since the player just logs in and most of the time plays alone, there is no need to reveal one’s identity. There are no cameras to monitor the player, he or she can play even while drinking, naked, or in a library. Many a famous personality has fallen from their high horses because they have been caught by casino cameras gambling – from heads of state to Hollywood stars. With online gambling, there is none of that.

When the provincial government of British Columbia legalized online gambling by running their own site, PlayNow.com, the B.C. Lottery Corp. (BCLC) president and CEO, Michael Graydon said, “Given the preferences of our customers and the popularity of online gambling, offering casino games on PlayNow.com is a natural next step for our business.” Now that Ontario and Quebec can’t wait to follow suit, there are still other Canadian provinces that are second guessing themselves. The United States has been taking very small steps in this arena, since there is a movement to repeal a law in 2006 making online gambling illegal in the country. But several parties are also looking into strengthening older legislation, because they think that the current laws being implemented still lack teeth. The states of Nevada and California are looking into having inter-state facilities, but it is very unlikely that other states, especially conservative ones are joining them, considering that even the legalization of putting slot machines in horse racetracks is already getting a lot of opposing views.

The future though of online gambling remains at a precipice—It is either accepted or outright rejected by countries. With a lot of regions accepting its existence though, it looks like more states that are previously against accepting online gambling would need to double take their stance and reassess their position. After all, no one can deny the help, financially, this industry brings to local coffers.
