Months after winning a casino license, the higher management of the Premier Gaming Group finally showed some progress on their project. This week, the management have presented a visual update to the Natchez Planning Commission the development of the Roth Hill casino project awarded to the. Visual reports were presented by Edward Vance, the architect of the project, which showed both the exterior and interior of the proposed casino. Vance claimed that plans for the casino have been given due care and attention. The project boasts details that are rumored to be very advanced. He explained, “It is going to be a state-of the-art-casino that will send the (Isle of) Capri down the river.”
Among those present in the meeting were Vance and other representatives of the project. Despite the outstanding representations, the group was hesitant to give an outline of the construction schedule. It did not give a projected start date as well. Vance said, “Every discipline in this project moves at a different pace. We’ve been working hard though you wouldn’t know that from what the press says.” Robert Nix, the planner of the city, said that what the group presented to the planning commission was a traffic analysis, which is a necessary ingredient in order for the commission to continue its approval of the project. Nix mentioned that with the traffic analysis already presented, “We can take that item off of the list of what they needed to do.” The traffic analysis presentation will now be subject of a review by Nix and his department. Laos to review the document will be City Engineer David Gardner. Nix said that should the reviewers find anything that would require changes or additions, Premier Gaming will be informed of them once the review is done.
The commission has already given its approval on the project’s architectural renderings when they were presented to them in the beginning of the year. The Natchez Preservation Commission at that time also gave their approval of the project. During this most recent meeting between the planning commission and Premier Gaming, Vance also took the opportunity to present images of the topography of the Mississippi River. He explained as well the riverbed will support the casino building. Vance mentioned that much time and effort was placed into making sure that the structural support for the casino through the riverbed would be done correctly. Vance explained, “The topography of this area is one of the toughest I’ve dealt with. It is made more difficult by the fact that we will be hanging halfway over the river.”
Meanwhile, Kevin Preston, the president of Premier Gaming Group agreed with Vance saying that the work on the building’s structural support has been one of the chief reasons why the project has consumed a lot of time from the approval of the architectural renderings to this next step. He commented, “The biggest issue is the structural component has been so difficult to get our arms around.” He did ensure the commission, though, that while the architects and construction people have been working on the issue, management has not been contented sitting and waiting. He explained, “We are getting all of this done now, so we can start as soon as the river allows.” He explained that in an ideal situation, the river level should be at 40 feet or lower for the installation of the piling system to start.
This piling system will support the weight of the casino over the river. The river level, as recorded by the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers is at 22.24 feet above gauge zero at Natchez pass.
The local press has asked Preston for updates on the casino construction after the meeting, but all attempts were in vain. In an email which Preston sent a day after the meeting with the commission, he explained, “The problem is when we update, the positives don’t get out. It’s evident from the last few articles. We will update the city and planning but that’s all we can commit to right now.” The press thus asked him of a list of positive developments that has not been publicized. The email was not returned.
