Denmark native Soren Eriksen has once again displayed his playing skills at the recently concluded New Zealand Poker Championships, hosted by Christchurch Casino. Besting eighty other highly-skilled players during the Main Event, Eriksen brought home the bacon, in the amount of $60, 000.
He bested nine of the players at the final table and still couldn’t believe his luck in winning the championships two years in a row. He’s hoping to make it a record three years in a row when he signs-up for the next NZ Poker Championship.
This is the first time that a player has taken home the title in two consecutive years, since the championship games started more than ten years ago. Everyone at Christchurch Casino is thrilled for Eriksen’s success and they are hoping to see more of him in the coming events.
All the games were engaging and entertaining; and spectators enjoyed every minute of the tournament. Included in the championship’s highlights is the Women’s Championship games; held for the 1st time by Christchurch Casino.
Players at the final table should take a bow themselves for besting some of the world’s best poker players. Second placer Cole Swannack brought home $33, 000; third placer Michael Spilkin bagged $24, 000; in fourth place is Richard Lancaster who took home $18, 000 and in fifth place is James Honeybone, taking home $13, 000.
Other players at the Main Event are Joseph Allis in sixth place; Andrew Middleditch in seventh; Alfred Saliba in eighth and finally, Mike Kim taking the ninth place.
There were others who didn’t manage to get to the final table but who also played well: Warren Pritchard, Simon Watt, past champion Australian David Borg, Dennis Huntly, Tony Hachem, Martin Cardno, Leo Boxell, Yann Pauchon and Koray Turker.
You could say that Eriksen is a relative newbie in the world of poker tournaments but he has joined quite a few of these in his quest to be among the best poker players around the globe.
Back in 2008, Eriksen joined the San Remo PokerStars EPT where he came in 63rd place, earning for himself $9, 201.00. During this same year, he also signed-up for the Asian Pacific Poker Tour PokerStars APPT, where he came in 15th place and brought home $6, 204.00.
By the time the New Zealand Championships came in full view last year, Eriksen was ready to battle it out once again with poker greats who have been known to win tournaments left and right; including then reigning champ David Borg.
The rest as they say is history, when Eriksen managed to topple Borg and win his 1st championship title at the NZ Championships. This year, Eriksen once again made history when he won the title for the second time.
Incidentally, Eriksen currently lives in New Zealand with his wife. He moved here from his native Denmark some four years ago. This makes the event’s organizers all the more pleased that the winner of this year’s championship games is a resident of New Zealand, hence; the title remains in New Zealand where it has found a home for two straight years.
Eriksen has dabbled into a new business venture and he claims that his prize money can tremendously help in funding the business to get it flying.
Poker lovers worldwide are pregnant with anticipation for next year’s New Zealand Championships where Eriksen will once again defend his title against other poker greats. This is definitely one event that everyone will watch out for; hoping to catch Eriksen in action and rooting for him for the third time in a row.
